Letters from Home Series

President Gregory Fowler and the UMGC Arts Program invite you to explore the art of nationally acclaimed artist Preston Sampson. A graduate of University of Maryland, College Park, with a degree in fine arts. This exhibition is a journey through his life and experiences captured in colorful, stylistic works in painting, mixed media, collage, encaustic, and pulp paper.

Documents Please

The Documents series is a layered look of documents from my fathers wallet and other found family objects which tell an American story of our ancestry and place in this country. A story of belonging , honor, culture and patriotism in the face of the unique challenges of being Black in this country.

Black MaleD

Black MaleD, Unidentified black male subjects. The term often translates to the mainstream public a threat , something to be viewed with suspicion or dread. The series many of which are portraits depict my counter narrative to the media depiction of our men both young and old. Heroic often overlooked subjects, fathers, teachers, husbands, friends, the everyday man. Our regal strength and perseverance in a continuum.

National Gallery of Art

“Artist from Elizabeth Catlett to Preston Sampson and Beverly McIver created portraits of everyday people: friends, relatives, and sometimes invented subjects. Each work here focuses on the face, sensitvely capturing individual features and expressions. By doing so, the artist invite us to share in their intimate engagement with the sitter. Despite their different styles and subjects, these works reflect the artists’ understanding of portraiture as a powerful form of respect and recognition of Black lives and experiences often underrepresented in major museums”.
